We expect and rely on clean water flowing throughout our homes everyday. Yet, we take water for granted. From drinking to bathing, we need clean water, yet, across the country, we continuously learn about dangerous water. As a result, how can homeowners implement water management solutions that make a difference?
WHY WATER TREATMENT?
First and foremost, we must learn more about the basics of water treatment.
Essentially, water treatment enables us to have safe, clean water in our homes.
For example, if you rely on municipal water, then your town has a water treatment facility. The plant collects natural water and processes it into consumable water. Typically, raw water is obtained from an underground aquifer, such as wells, lakes, rivers or reservoirs.
In essence, water treatment improves water quality by disinfecting and purifying untreated ground and surface water.
WATER MANAGEMENT SOLUTION #1: UNDERSTANDING WATER QUALITY
Understanding your water quality provides the foundation for future water management solutions. Regardless of the source of your home water, whether well water or city water, take steps to determine the quality.
Although municipal water adheres to local and federal regulations during processing, impurities still remain. Plus, hard water occurs naturally in roughly 85% of the country.
Hard water derives from minerals (such as calcium and magnesium) accumulating in the water. For example, things such as chalk, limestone, and marble contain these minerals. In fact, most of the underlying elements of our planet are made from limestone. These are the underlying cause of hard water.
Hard water can be tough on your home, skin and wallet. Plus, it impacts our health due to the reduction in overall water quality. If you experience any of the following, then you may have hard water.
- water spots on dishes or glasses.
- soap scum in the shower and sink.
- dulled hair and clogged pores.
- scratchy or hard clothes after doing the laundry.
- increased difficulty in household chores.
- reduced water flow and pressure.
To help, SolvIt offers a free in-home water analysis and proposal.
The proposal provides options to create a custom water management solution that’s right for you. We provide our water quality solutions to our local service areas.
Additionally, SolvIt partners with Costco across Connecticut to offer water treatment services at local stores. For any questions, head to your nearest Costco and consult with an expert water treatment specialist.
WATER MANAGEMENT SOLUTION #2: PROPER WATER FILTRATION
There are various types of water filters, which are used for different reasons, such as providing clean drinking water. In fact, water filtration refers to any system or process that removes particles and/or pollutants from water. For example, water filters remove impurities in the water.
Due to the natural environment, impurities may be a result of hard water. However, other conditions also cause poor water quality. Whether your home has hard water or other environmental factors are in play, it is important to understand the specific solutions that help improve your overall water quality.
It may be time to add filtration to your water management solutions if you experience any of the following:
- tap water doesn’t taste or smell good.
- water doesn’t lather properly when mixed with soap.
- your water leaves scale or spots on surfaces.
- laboratory tests completed and you aren’t sure how to solve the problems.
HOW TO SELECT THE RIGHT WATER FILTRATION SYSTEM?
Water filtration systems differ in size, price, installation and efficiency, but they all in some way improve home water quality.
- Point-of Use Water Filters focus on lead removal.
- Countertop Water Filters and Under-the-Sink Filters focus on safe drinking water.
- Whole-House Water Filters offers a comprehensive solution to water contaminants.
WATER MANAGEMENT SOLUTION #3: WATER PURIFICATION
Disinfecting city drinking water is one of the major public health advances of the 20th century.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates municipal water. However, as we all know, the quality of tap water varies from town to town and home to home. To learn more about your home tap water, then the Environmental Working Group constructed a tap water database.
As a result, homeowners need to understand water purification.
Water purification is the removal of contaminants from raw water to produce drinking water that is pure enough for human consumption. It is part of the treatment process, which removes substances, such as parasite, bacteria, algae, viruses, fungi, minerals and man-made chemical pollutants. As Science Daily points out, the water purification process is complex.
“MANY ENVIRONMENTAL AND COST CONSIDERATIONS AFFECT THE LOCATION AND DESIGN OF WATER PURIFICATION PLANTS. GROUNDWATER IS CHEAPER TO TREAT, BUT AQUIFERS USUALLY HAVE LIMITED OUTPUT. SURFACE WATER SOURCES REQUIRE CAREFUL MONITORING FOR THE PRESENCE OF UNUSUAL TYPES OR LEVELS OF MICROBIAL/DISEASE CAUSING CONTAMINANTS. THE TREATMENT PLANT ITSELF MUST BE KEPT SECURE FROM VANDALISM AND TERRORISM.
IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO TELL WHETHER WATER IS SAFE TO DRINK JUST BY LOOKING AT IT. SIMPLE PROCEDURES SUCH AS BOILING OR THE USE OF A HOUSEHOLD CHARCOAL FILTER ARE NOT SUFFICIENT FOR TREATING WATER FROM AN UNKNOWN SOURCE. EVEN NATURAL SPRING WATER – CONSIDERED SAFE FOR ALL PRACTICAL PURPOSES IN THE 1800S – MUST NOW BE TESTED BEFORE DETERMINING WHAT KIND OF TREATMENT IS NEEDED.”
WATER MANAGEMENT SOLUTION #4: IDENTIFY SAFE WATER PRACTICES
There is no perfect water. There are ways to identify safe water and ensure your home and family remain healthy.
In the US, the federal and local regulations and water treatment facilities work. It may seem like the dangers are lurking in the pipes, but these are simply warning signs to understand our home water.
- Test your tap water.
- Drink from a canteen vs plastic water bottle.
- Drink cool water.
- Add a water filter to your home water.
